LE TARBOUCHE. Quando un accessorio diventa simbolo. Opere di Mouna Rebeiz
1995 Salizada San Stae Venezia
20 May - 8 November 2026
The artistic world of Mouna Rebeiz (born 1957, Beirut) is devoted to the celebration of female beauty and sensuality, rooted in the ideal of the “Three Graces.” In her nudes inspired by classical iconography, Rebeiz reinterprets Classicism through a contemporary sensibility, generating reflections on ideal beauty. Fascinated by subjects from ancient painting and by symbols, the artist has developed a pictorial cycle dedicated to the tarbouche, the traditional conical hat worn by Muslim men since the fourteenth century and frequently depicted in Venetian paintings and drawings. Made of red wool or silk and adorned with a band or plume, the tarbouche has long been worn on official political and religious occasions as a sign of respect. In Rebeiz’s works, this headdress provocatively becomes the defining element of monumentally sensual female nudes. As the artist notes, it has never been more urgent to reflect on the essence of “being a woman.” The tarbouche thus evokes Venetian painting through its purplish-red tones while underscoring the symbolic power of accessories and their capacity to generate new, cross-cultural interpretations.
